From January 19th to 22nd, 2023, the ninth edition of the Mizmorim Kammermusik Festival 2023 follows the life stages of Theodor Herzl (1860–1904) and his “Project Blue-White”. Twelve concerts and a panel discussion will show musical works bridging the utopia and the reality of Zionism. With his publication “Der Judenstaat” (1896) and the First Zionist Congress, which was held for the first time in Basel in 1897, Herzl not only provided the theoretical and practical foundations for the movement for a Jewish national state, but also placed great importance to music.
Established and founded in 2015 by Michal Lewkowicz, the Mizmorim Kammermusik Festival is a multi-day classical chamber music event celebrating the diverse encounters between Jewish music and Western art music. Every year in January, renowned artists from Switzerland and all over the world come together in Basel to present works from different epochs on a specific topic. The programs and artists take the audience on a varied journey, discovering unknown works and new perspectives on the classics. Due to its unique concept, the Mizmorim Chamber Music Festival has gained a special place in the Swiss cultural calendar. The Festival owes its name to one of the first manifestations of music, the biblical Psalms, in Hebrew Mizmorim.
