SUMMARY:Wiener Festwochen 2023
DESCRIPTION:When it started in the 1950s\, the Wiener Festwochen laid several important foundations for creating a new image for Vienna\, both nationally and internationally. After Vienna and Austria had been isolated by Austro-fascism and Nazism\, it was necessary to reconnect with the world\, to integrate the city and the country into the international discourse of art and culture\, to promote life\, openness\, and the idea of a future. \nThroughout its subsequent history\, the Wiener Festwochen has always taken on cultural and socio-political challenges. \nThe Wiener Festwochen 2023 is positioned as a multidisciplinary art festival in the city. Among Vienna’s cultural offerings\, the point is to present and allow things not yet seen and not yet heard\, and to work as a content engine linking genres\, thoughts\, and ideas. The task of the Wiener Festwochen will therefore be to create frameworks for new alliances\, rather than to build new borders and fences of art. \nThe Wiener Festwochen 2023 combines theatre\, performance\, dance\, music\, fine arts\, installation\, discourse\, participation\, workshops\, and new art forms that cannot yet be categorised. It is a space for multidisciplinary creation that is visionary while being aware of the history\, that is international while anchored in the city\, that opens fruitful dialogues between well established artists and emerging figures–and between the audiences. \nThe Festival commissions\, initiates and accompanies artistic visions that are engaged with this time\, in this world. Visions and works capable of taking people out of their comfort zones\, which summons the imagination\, explores unfamiliar terrain\, sometimes at the risk of losing certainties. Visions and works that favour diversity and nuance\, openness and curiosity for what appears to be foreign and unknown.\nBy introducing new international names to the Viennese scene and to Europe in general\, and by welcoming projects that instead of stereotyped representation make the image of cultural identities more diverse\, the Wiener Festwochen 2023 intends to embrace complexity. \nIt is an international festival that presents work from artists coming from different contexts and areas of the world. Far from being driven by a desire of exoticism\, this choice responds to growing globalisation. In a present in which we are daily confronted with discourses about different areas of the world\, international festivals can give the possibility of a direct encounter with the singularity of an artistic vision\, undoing simplifications of a single narrative. \nThe Wiener Festwochen 2023 is not only a structure of production and presentation; it is also a space where constantly reflections on this time\, on this world are activated through the lens of artistic creation.

SUMMARY:International Joseph Haydn Chamber Music Competition 2023
DESCRIPTION:The International Joseph Haydn Chamber Music Competition 2023 will see young string quartets and piano trios from all over the world converge on Vienna to compete artistically for the eighth time. The competition\, held since 2001\, has by now developed into one of the young international  chamber music scene’s largest and most important  such events.Alongside its reputation\, considerable cash prizes\, provided by respected institutions\, friends and partners of the mdw – University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna itself\, provide the incentive for the best young ensembles to step up and compete with their colleagues. \n  \nThe focus\, of course\, is on the competition’s namesake himself: Joseph Haydn\, the pioneer of Viennese Classicism and “father” of chamber music. Playing Haydn’s music skillfully  and in a way that does it appropriate justice is one of the biggest challenges for young professional ensembles. But alongside Haydn’s chamber music oeuvre\, the competition also places a deliberate and special emphasis on Viennese Classicist chamber music works in general\, as well as on works of the Second Viennese School. In each of these categories\, importance is accorded to stylistically appropriate musical interpretation and the building of bridges between the two eras in question. A further  area of emphasis is the promotion  of contemporary classical music. This aspect is served especially by the composing competition held in cooperation with the Department of Music Composition and Electro-acoustics\, the winning works of which are made part of the competition’s compulsory repertoire. \n  \nString quartets and piano trios of all nationalities are welcome to apply to the International Joseph Haydn Chamber Music Competition 2023.\nApplication Deadline: 1.9.2022\nAge limit – born on or after 1 January 1987.
