SUMMARY:ISME World Conference 2024
DESCRIPTION:The University of the Arts Helsinki has the honor of hosting the 36th World Conference of the ISME 2024. The theme of the conference\, Advocacy for Sustainability in Music Education\, makes us feel both excited and humbled. \n  \n\n\n\n\nOn behalf of ISME I am delighted to invite you to attend the 36th ISME World Conference in Helsinki in 2024. \nI appreciate and thank you for the positive feedback so many provided for the online conference\, but\, as many also said\, one of the great values of the world conference is being with other music educators and the human interaction\, finding new research partners\, catching up with old friends\, and making new ones. It is heart-warming that in 2024 we can return to that. \nI must also thank University of the Arts Helsinki (UniArts) for continuing to support us after the disappointment of the cancellation in 2020. We\, and they\, felt the importance of returning to Helsinki not just for healing and closure\, but also because this is the perfect time to be in the Nordic Region. UniArts has much that we can learn from. Finland and the Nordic countries are at the forefront in providing leadership in education and the arts. They also lead the way in ecological sustainability. Both are critical issues for us and for the world. Finland is also a strong community\, where people look out for each other and care about the common good. That is so important for our own self-care and I hope you will enjoy experiencing that. \nI commend the ISME World Conference 2024 to you and look forward to greeting you there. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBo Wah Leung \n\nISME President 2022-2024 \n\n\n\nMusic education can have its own significant role in transforming the world towards a sustainable future. In Uniarts Helsinki\, we believe that music and other arts have enormous potential to make a difference in the world. We need all that potential\, all the questions and new partnerships for change that music educators and other stakeholders can offer.\n\nIn 1990\, the 19th world conference of ISME also took place in Helsinki. It was hosted by the Sibelius Academy which has since become part of the University of the Arts Helsinki. The 1990 theme was Music Education Facing the Future. At that time\, we felt that we had already lived through a period of rapid and radical changes. No one could have prophesied the kind of huge transformation the whole world was facing towards the end of last century – not to mention the decades after that.\n\nThe 36th ISME Conference will provide a platform for us as music educators around the world to learn with and from each other. We welcome you to Helsinki to share your viewpoints\, to envision ways forward\, and to create new partnerships for change. Together we are stronger in advocating for social\, cultural\, economic\, and ecological sustainability in and through music education.\n\nOn behalf of the University of the Arts Helsinki and all friends of ISME in Finland we cordially invite you to join the 36th ISME World Conference in summer 2024.
