SUMMARY:Basel Composition Competition 2025
DESCRIPTION:The Basel Composition Competition (BCC) is an international event held biennially in collaboration with the Paul Sacher Foundation in Basel to give recognition to works for chamber and symphony orchestra. Following the success of four events\, a fifth competition is to be held from 30 January to 2 February 2025 under the directorship of Jury President Michael Jarrell. \n\n\n\n\nThe Basel Composition Competition 2025 is open to all living composers\, with no limitation as to age or nationality\, with the exception of previous BCC award-winners. \n\n\n\nThe jury shall comprise the composers Michael Jarrell (Jury President)\, Liza Lim\, Augusta Read Thomas\, Andrea Scartazzini and Dr. Florian Besthorn\, the Director of the Paul Sacher Foundation. One representative from each orchestra will also join the jury to help select which entries are to go through to the next round of the Basel Composition Competition 2025. The Jury is expected to shortlist six works for chamber orchestra and six for symphony orchestra\, all of which will be premiered at the BCC. At least four of these twelve works will then be selected and performed for a second time in the final round; prizes will be awarded to three or four of these in turn at the end of the concert.

SUMMARY:Mizmorim Festival 2024
DESCRIPTION:In its tenth edition\, taking place January 24th–31st\, the Mizmorim Festival 2024 will be dedicated to the universal cosmos of the Psalms under the title “Tehillim”. To celebrate the festival’s tenth anniversary\, it will for the first time last an entire week and present no less than twelve concerts\, a photo exhibition\, museum tours\, a lecture\, and a late night program\, all taking place at eight different venues throughout Basel.\n\n\n\n\n\nThere are many characteristics that distinguish the great religions from each other\, but there are also some characteristics that unite them. The love of art\, poetry\, music and song\, for example\, which finds its expression in the Psalms\, is one of these uniting characteristics. The biblical book of Tehillim (Book of Psalms) contains 150 individual Mizmorim (Psalms)\, and given the inexorable connection between poetry and music\, the Mizmorim Chamber Music Festival strives to live up to its name – and to the Psalms themselves – with our 10th Anniversary Edition\, “Tehillim”. \n\n\nThe anthology of 150 psalms\, whose composition is attributed to King David and others\, is a significant part of the Jewish liturgy. The poems include songs of praise to God\, as well as accusations\, gratitude in various life situations\, and expressions of love\, anger\, despair\, and hope – themes that are significant in all religions and cultures. \n\n\nThe festival program includes well-known versions of Psalms by Orlando di Lasso\, Salomone Rossi\, Heinrich Schütz and Johann Sebastian Bach\, as well as newer versions for chamber music ensembles by various composers including Peter Eötvös\, Oliver Knussen\, Darius Milhaud and Steve Reich. The program also includes purely instrumental musical reflections\, confirming the inspiring power of these millennia-old texts. \n\nThe festival features nearly thirty first-class musicians\, ten prestigious ensembles\, two world premieres\, and several Swiss premieres. As a special highlight\, the Lucerne Festival Contemporary Orchestra (LFCO)\, led by Swiss conductor Baldur Brönnimann\, will perform Steve Reich’s work Tehillim in the Musiksaal of the Stadtcasino Basel. Other highlights of the festival include concerts with the Leipzig vocal ensemble Amarcord in the Basel Synagogue\, and the ensembles Hespèrion XXI\, the Capella Reial de Catalunya and Jordi Savall in the Martinskirche of Basel.

SUMMARY:Basel Composition Competition 2023
DESCRIPTION:The ‘Basel Composition Competition’ (BCC) is an international event held biennially in collaboration with the Paul Sacher Foundation in Basel to give recognition to works for chamber and symphony orchestra. Following the success of the three events in February 2017 and 2019 and March 2021\, a fourth Competition is to be held from 8 to 12 February 2023 under the directorship of Jury President Michael Jarrell. \nThe Competition is open to all living composers\, with no limitation as to age or nationality\, with the exception of previous BCC award-winners. \nNo person is more representative of the Basel musical scene than Paul Sacher (1906-1999). He devoted himself tirelessly to the music of his century in his various roles as conductor\, as commissioner of new works and as sponsor and member of numerous guilds and institutions. \nAmongst the works commissioned by Paul Sacher are Béla Bartók’s “Music for Strings\, Percussion and Celesta”\, Bohuslav Martinů’s “Toccata e due Canzoni”\, Igor Stravinsky’s “Concerto en ré” as well as Arthur Honegger’s Fourth Symphony. \nIn 1973\, Sacher founded the Paul Sacher Foundation which gained international reputation as a leading research institution after acquiring the estate of Igor Stravinsky and collections from Anton Webern and Bruno Maderna. \nIn 2017–18 years after his death – Paul Sacher’s spirit will be revived once again as the most compelling works of the 21st century are brought to Basel for the first edition of “Basel Composition Competition” (BCC)\, an international event open to the public\, conceived and organised by Artistic Management GmbH in cooperation with the Paul Sacher Foundation and directed by the Head Juror\, Wolfang Rihm. \nDuring the selection process\, the jury will shortlist ten to twelve pieces to be performed at the competition by the the Basel Chamber Orchestra\, Basel Symphony Orchestra and the Basel Sinfonietta. The three winning works shall be awarded monetary prizes totalling CHF 100\,000.

SUMMARY:Mizmorim Festival 2023
DESCRIPTION:From January 19th to 22nd\, 2023\, the ninth edition of the Mizmorim Kammermusik Festival 2023 follows the life stages of Theodor Herzl (1860–1904) and his “Project Blue-White”. Twelve concerts and a panel discussion will show musical works bridging the utopia and the reality of Zionism. With his publication “Der Judenstaat” (1896) and the First Zionist Congress\, which was held for the first time in Basel in 1897\, Herzl not only provided the theoretical and practical foundations for the movement for a Jewish national state\, but also placed great importance to music. \n  \n\n\nEstablished and founded in 2015 by Michal Lewkowicz\, the Mizmorim Kammermusik Festival is a multi-day classical chamber music event celebrating the diverse encounters between Jewish music and Western art music. Every year in January\, renowned artists from Switzerland and all over the world come together in Basel to present works from different epochs on a specific topic.
