SUMMARY:Marlboro Music Festival 2023
DESCRIPTION:The Marlboro Music Festival 2023 is presented on Saturday evenings and Sunday afternoons as well as on one Friday evening each summer. \nAfter three weeks of daily rehearsals\, Marlboro artists begin sharing the results of their in-depth collaborations with audiences. The programs are selected from the 60-80 groups in rehearsal at any one time; only one-quarter of the more than 250 works explored during the summer can be included. \nEach week\, groups who feel that they have achieved especially successful results recommend their works for performance. As a result of this dynamic scheduling process\, we do not know concert repertoire or personnel more than a week in advance. Yet\, the performances provide exciting musical discoveries and represent the joyous spirit and dedication to excellence of the entire Marlboro Music community. \n  \nAbout \nEach summer\, Marlboro gathers some 85 exceptionally talented instrumentalists and singers of widely varying ages\, backgrounds\, and points of view. New musical leaders are joined by eminent concert artists from around the world who live together for seven weeks as one nurturing and closely-knit family. \nWhile in residence\, the artists have the rare luxury of virtually unlimited time to rehearse works of their own choosing from the vast chamber music repertoire. These special\, in-depth collaborations allow the musicians to exchange ideas\, test new approaches\, get to the heart of the music\, and make lasting discoveries. After three weeks of rehearsals\, Marlboro shares its music-making on five weekends of public concerts. \n  \nOpening Weekend:\nSaturday\, July 15 at 8 pm\nSunday\, July 16 at 2:30 pm \nWeek Two: \nSaturday\, July 22 at 8 pm\nSunday\, July 23 at 2:30 pm \nWeek Three:\nSaturday\, July 29 at 8 pm\nSunday\, July 30 at 2:30 pm \nWeek Four:\nFriday\, August 4 at 8 pm *\nSaturday\, August 5 at 8 pm\nSunday\, August 6 at 2:30 pm \nWeek Five:\nFriday\, August 11 at 8 pm\nSaturday\, August 12 at 8 pm\nSunday\, August 13 at 2:30 pm \n  \nMitsuko Uchida & Jonathan Biss\, Artistic Directors \nOne of the world’s foremost pianists\, Mitsuko Uchida is renowned for her interpretations of composers including Mozart\, Beethoven\, Schubert\, and Schumann\, as well as masterpieces of the 20th century and beyond. \nShe has served Marlboro in a vital leadership role for more than 20 years\, including as sole artistic director from 2013-18—the only artist to serve in this position besides co-founder Rudolf Serkin. \nMs. Uchida has served Marlboro also as a senior artist (1974\, 1992); as co-artistic director with Richard Goode (1999-2013); and as a member of the Committee for Artistic Direction with Mr. Goode and András Schiff (1994-1999). \nMs. Uchida has demonstrated a long-standing commitment to aiding the development of young musicians and is a trustee of the Borletti-Buitoni Trust. In June 2009 she was made a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire. \nLearn more about Ms. Uchida at mitsukouchida.com. \n  \nJonathan Biss first attended Marlboro in 1997\, at the start of his career\, and returned in 2006 in the role of senior artist—giving back to new generations of young musicians what he himself received at Marlboro. He was appointed co-artistic director with Mitsuko Uchida in 2018. \nMr. Biss enjoys a varied career performing\, recording\, writing\, teaching\, and curating innovative projects that blend music and scholarship at the highest level. These include “Schumann: Under the Influence\,” a 30-concert exploration of the composer’s role in music history; a project examining “late style” works and developments by major composers; the bestselling eBook “Beethoven’s Shadow\,” the first Kindle Single by a classical musician; and “Exploring Beethoven’s Piano Sonatas\,” the first open online classical music course\, which has reached over 150\,000 people in 185 countries. \nHe is also in demand as a faculty member at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia.
