SUMMARY:Lucerne Summer Festival 2024
DESCRIPTION:Lucerne Festival is one of the leading international festivals in the world of classical music. Lucerne Festival was founded in 1938; since 1999\, Michael Haefliger has been its Executive and Artistic Director.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe central festival takes place in summer from mid-August to mid-September and offers a widely varied range of approximately 100 concerts and related events. Each Summer Festival features a guiding theme that runs dramaturgically through the programming. The Festival presents a diverse array of formats\, including symphony concerts\, chamber music\, recitals\, debuts\, late night events\, and much more. Flanking the Summer Festival are short festivals\, two in spring and one in fall: a spring residency featuring the Lucerne Festival Orchestra\, a Piano Fest in May curated by the pianist Igor Levit and “Lucerne Festival Forward\,” which takes place in November. “Lucerne Festival Forward” is artistically and conceptually designed by musicians from the Lucerne Festival Contemporary Orchestra (LFCO). The KKL Luzern\, designed by Jean Nouvel and equally renowned for its acoustics and architecture\, is Lucerne Festival’s central venue. \nThe program of the Lucerne Summer Festival 2024 is available by clicking HERE. \nView last year’s Festival HERE.

SUMMARY:Lucerne Festival Forward 2023
DESCRIPTION:The Lucerne Festival Forward 2023 will take place from 17 to 19 November 2023 at the KKL Luzern. \nEvery year in November\, Lucerne Festival Forward offers contemporary music a platform and gives a voice to the musicians of the younger generation. It all starts out from the idea of using the international network of the Lucerne Festival Academy\, which has grown over the years and now comprises more than 1\,200 artists\, as a collective mastermind. And this is the case in several respects. The concerts are not only prepared and presented by the Lucerne Festival Contemporary Orchestra (LFCO)\, our orchestra of excellence for the performance of new and contemporary music. Selected Contemporary Leaders from the Academy network also participate to develop the program as curators. In doing so\, they take new approaches to closing the gap between so-called “new music” and the audience: they seek out contact with listeners\, experiment with unusual concert formats\, focus on lesser-known voices and aesthetic positions with respect to the creation of contemporary music\, and purposefully mix nationalities\, generations\, and genders. \nResponsible for Lucerne Festival:\nFelix Heri & Mark Sattler \n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\nLucerne Festival Contemporary Leaders:\nChloë Abbott | Jack Adler-McKean | Cecila Bercovich | Ettore Biagi | Winnie Huang | Helga Karen | Edward Kass | Marina Kifferstein | Angus Lee | Alex Lipowski | Stephen Menotti | Benjamin Mitchell | Ben Roidl-Ward | Michelle Ross | James Austin Smith | Nathan Watts | Johnna Wu | Andrew Zhou

SUMMARY:Lucerne Festival Academy 2023
DESCRIPTION:The Lucerne Festival Academy 2023 is many things in one: a master school for the music of our time\, a laboratory for the future\, and an international network. \nThe Lucerne Festival Academy is a school for new music and a laboratory for the future. Every summer\, some 100 talented young musicians from all over the world are given the opportunity to concentrate on a repertoire that is still too much overlooked in the classical music business: the music of the 20th and 21st centuries. Through daily rehearsals and workshops over a three-week period\, they immerse themselves in key selected works of Modernism; work on and rehearse brand-new scores that are often written especially for the Academy; and experiment with innovative forms of performance. The Festival audience in turn benefits from unconventional programs that teem with discoveries and offer amazing listening experiences. \nThis unique campus for contemporary music was founded in 2003 by the French composer and conductor Pierre Boulez and the Festival’s Executive and Artistic Director Michael Haefliger. The German composer Wolfgang Rihm has served as the Academy’s Artistic Director since 2016. The faculty comprises leading performers of contemporary music. In addition\, other renowned conductors\, composers\, and soloists are invited every summer\, including such figures as Sir George Benjamin\, Peter Eötvös\, Isabelle Faust\, Alan Gilbert\, Heinz Holliger\, Anne-Sophie Mutter\, and Sir Simon Rattle. The works of the summer repertoire are then presented to the public in concerts by the Lucerne Festival Contemporary Orchestra (LFCO)\, in which all of the students join together\, as well as in various ensemble programs. \nIt is not only instrumentalists who benefit from the Lucerne Festival Academy’s praxis-oriented training\, but conductors and composers as well. In the Conducting Fellowship\, young conductors observe and follow along during the Academy’s rehearsal work and also gain important experience in a master class. The Composer Seminar in turn gives young composers an opportunity both to discuss their works with Wolfgang Rihm and other composers and to test out these works with musicians from the ranks of the Lucerne Festival Academy. Finally\, the Roche Young Commissions series gives young composers commissions to write new works.

SUMMARY:Piano Fest 2023
DESCRIPTION:“Dear Public \nYou arrive\, check in at your hotel\, rehearse. Then comes the concert. Afterwards\, you have dinner\, maybe a reception. The next morning\, it’s off to the train station or airport – and on to the next stop. This is how most guest appearances in the classical music industry tend to play out. As a result\, our impressions of the places where we perform and of our encounters with the people who listen to us remain fleeting. A chance to spend time\, before or after our own performance\, with the colleagues who are sharing the stage is even more unlikely. \nAt the Lucerne Piano Fest\, which takes place for the first time in 2023 under my artistic direction\, I want things to be different. My aim is not to present stars whose schedules are micromanaged down to the last minute but individualists who take time for a somewhat longer stay\, who become engaged in genuine encounters and who – just like me – want to make an impact through their art that lasts beyond the moment. I hope to create an atmosphere of openness and trust so that we have the opportunity to listen closely to each other\, and I am convinced that the intimate atmosphere of a private concert can be conjured in the KKL Luzern as well. \nAll of us who make our living at the keyboard have been familiar since early childhood with the reality of endless hours of lonely practice. We spend that time not merely studying how to use our hands to get difficult pieces to “work.” Forced to rely on ourselves\, we seek direct communication\, a way to speak through music and to reach out and touch the people who come to hear us in the concert hall. These periods of isolation only intensify the need to share spontaneous feedback and community with you\, our audience. \nTwo principles have guided me in conceptualizing the Piano Fest 2023. The first is my desire for everyone who participates to stay in Lucerne for the entire duration\, if possible\, so they are able to interact not only with the audience but with each other as well – on and off stage. Second\, I find it important to show how written and improvised music\, classical and jazz\, discipline and freedom can coexist.” \n  \nIgor Levit \nPianist and Festival Curator

SUMMARY:Lucerne Festival Forward 2022
DESCRIPTION:Lucerne Festival Forward 2022 once again stands for innovation and new ideas. Four performances will turn the conventional rules of the traditional concert business upside down. 18 Contemporary Leaders\, all former participants in the Lucerne Festival Academy\, will curate the events of this experimental fall festival. As was the case last year\, it will be led by Contemporary director Felix Heri and dramaturge Mark Sattler. Violinist Patricia Kopatchinskaja will also join the creative team for a Saturday evening project. Four carefully designed sonic events will be offered. \n“New sounds\, formats\, concepts — Forward is our crazy playground for experimental concert experiences\,” remarks Michael Haefliger\, Executive and Artistic Director of Lucerne Festival. “The creative team of our Academy network brings international know-how regarding the new music scene to Lucerne\, which will be complemented by a first-class contribution from Patricia Kopatchinskaja.” \nOn Friday evening\, the opening concert in the Planetarium at the Swiss Museum of Transport will combine visual and sonic worlds of the micro- and macrocosm with a 360-degree video installation and the oscillating sounds of a string quartet by Anna Thorvaldsdottir. On Saturday evening\, violinist Patricia Kopatchinskaja will present a thoroughly staged sonic journey that explores György Ligeti’s Violin Concerto. Together with the 18 Contemporary Leaders\, she will compose a concert collage enriched by four world premieres that musically embark on a search for “Ligeti’s lost melody.” In a subsequent “Late Night” concert at the Neubad Luzern\, soloists and ensembles of the Lucerne Festival Contemporary Orchestra (LFCO) will explore the sonic possibilities of this location\, which is designed around what used to be a swimming pool\, using precise playing instructions\, improvisation\, and interaction with the audience. \nThe fourth concert on Sunday evening will focus on Unsuk Chin’s Gougalón (Scenes from a Street Theater)\, which the Korean composer describes as “imaginary folklore.” Musicians from the LFCO will alternate the six movements with new works that expand the concept of the evening through theatrical\, experimental approaches. And at the end of this concert and of the entire festival\, a large-scale participatory action that involves mopping\, sweeping\, and vacuuming will take place. Ein sauberes Ende (“A Clean End”) is the name of the clean-up performance by the artistic team led by Lucerne-based composer Urban Mäder\, in which anyone can participate. Registration is possible starting on 1 August via lucernefestival.ch/acleanend. A workshop concert for children on Sunday afternoon completes the lineup for the Lucerne Festival Forward 2022 and the next generation of listeners.
