SUMMARY:Beethovenfest Bonn 2024
DESCRIPTION:Beethovenfest Bonn 2024 is one of the oldest and most important music festivals in Germany. Founded in 1845 by Franz Liszt in Beethoven’s birthplace\, it is now an internationally recognized cultural beacon with around 80 events in Bonn and the region every year in August and September. \nUnder its artistic director Steven Walter\, Beethovenfest is currently repositioning itself: as a festival that reaches out to all demographic groups\, a festival that thinks radically contemporary and future-oriented to a living tradition\, testing out the future of concert life in a variety of ways and playing a significant role in shaping it. \n»All men become brothers« is the core message of the famous ode »To Joy« from Ludwig van Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony. Beethovenfest Bonn 2024 is directed towards humanity’ diversity and wants to translate Beethoven’s humanistic gesture into concrete programming: a festival of musical diversity; a coming together of the most diverse origins and identities in the common »home of music«; a celebration in which Beethoven’s work meets the diverse world of the 21st century. \n\n\n»Art wants us not to stand still.« Ludwig van Beethoven wrote this to the violinist Karl Holz. Beethoven’s openness to new ideas remains a source of inspiration for us. Beethovenfest Bonn has always drawn productive sparks from the work of this extraordinary composer. And the festival does not want to »stand still«. But innovation requires freedom\, plenty of time and the courage to offer a platform to completely new\, as yet untested ideas. For the first time in the festival’s history\, the fellowship programme enables young artists to develop and present new\, extensive music projects on site. This results in original artistic productions for Bonn and the region every year.

SUMMARY:Beethovenfest Bonn 2023
DESCRIPTION:Beethovenfest Bonn 2023 is a »festival about life«. The festival as a place of lively encounter\, as a platform for new beginnings and initiatives\, as a special time in life – Beethovenfest 2023 wants to be all of these things. \nUnder Steven Walter’s directorship\, Beethovenfest is reorienting itself. It wants to be a festival that affects everyone’s lives and that addresses the big questions of our time. Last year\, the motto “All People” was about the issue of diversity in the classical concert world. This year\, we are questioning the sustainability of our way of life\, including as a festival. \nMusic cannot solve the climate crisis\, but it does move people and open up new horizons: it triggers change. This change should also be initiated in our business and work as a festival. We are starting a change process and evaluating our ecological footprint. For this\, we are supported by regional and national partners such as Knauber in Bonn and the renowned Öko Institut. \n\n\nNumerous concerts at this year’s festival focus on music that grows out of the encounter between humanity and nature. Throughout the centuries\, nature has been a benchmark for art – especially in music history\, it is possible to trace how the relationship between humankind and nature has changed. Religious concepts\, new scientific discoveries and technical progress – all these have had a great influence on how mankind has understood nature. The festival program includes classics of the great hymns to nature\, such as Joseph Haydn’s oratorio »The Seasons« and Gustav Mahler’s »Song of the Earth«. But also many new voices that process the current\, crisis-ridden relationship with nature in sound. \nA festival about life must also reflect on the limits of life. Death is part of life—perhaps in no art form it is as omnipresent as in music. We mourn through music and search for transcendence in it. And the works of composers have an afterlife\, making them immortal in a certain way. Many concerts in the festival focus on the limits of life: in the great musical legacies of masterpieces such as Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony or in lament music such as that of Johann Sebastian Bach. \nAsking the question about sustainable living means looking into the future. Many artists and ensembles are doing this and developing new ideas and initiatives: for their own sustainable ways of working and for new artistic paths. We would like to offer them a platform – with space for experiments\, for opening up concert formats and involving the audience. This is exemplified by the Stegreif Orchester with its project on the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals or the newly founded\, visionary one.Music Orchestra\, which will play its first concert at Beethovenfest Bonn 2023.
