Debrecen is Hungary’s second largest city, the home of not only a prominent symphonic orchestra and an exquisite theatre, but also of the world-renowned Kodály Choir. A truly youthful and international city: the University of Debrecen has about 30,000 students, with the highest proportion of foreign graduates from the CEE countries. As the cultural, educational and economic center of Eastern Hungary, it is easily reachable by all means of transportation, and it also has an international airport.
The Kodály Philharmonic Debrecen is the professional symphony orchestra of Debrecen and the Kodály Competition Debrecen 2022.. The director of the institution since 2011 is conductor Dániel Somogyi-Tóth, organist. The Bartók-Pásztory Prize-winning Kodály Philharmonic, founded by the Hungarian State Railways nearly a century ago, has gained a new image in the recent years: it is receiving more and more ground and recognition in the musical life of Hungary and the world. The ensemble is regular participant of Budapest Spring Festival and CAFe Budapest Contemporary Art Festival and co-founder of the Russian Music Festival; also a member of prestigious international productions in both symphonic and opera literature.
