Hamamatsu International Piano Competition 2021
The Executive Committee of the 11th Hamamatsu International Piano Competition (President: Yasutomo Suzuki, Mayor of Hamamatsu City) regrets to announce the cancellation of the competition slated to be held in November this year. The decision was made in view of the current situation in Japan, where strict travel restrictions and a mandatory 14-day quarantine after entry are implemented to prevent the spread of COVID-19 and there are no prospects for normalization of entry measures in the foreseeable future.
The Hamamatsu International Piano Competition 2021 is open to pianists born on or after January 1, 1991.
The Hamamatsu International Piano Competition was started in 1991 in commemoration of the 80th anniversary of the founding of Hamamatsu City. Since then this international cultural program has been held every three years to celebrate the history and tradition of the city of music and musical instruments. The purpose of this Competition is to encourage the development of music and culture, to promote international cultural exchanges and to contribute to the nurturing of musicians by providing promising young pianists from all over the world with an opportunity to display the fruits of their daily study.
The Hamamatsu International Piano Competition, held every three years, marks its 11th edition this time. The Competition was designated as a member of the World Federation of International Music Competitions only seven years after its inaugural edition, and has solidified its position as an international piano competition since then. One of the distinctive characteristics of the Competition is that a lower age limit for application was eliminated at the 4th edition, which has largely contributed to unearthing many of young talented pianists who are currently active in the world music scenes. The Competition also enjoys high reputation from jury members and competitors for its exceptional management and operation. The Tokyo Symphony Orchestra will accompany the Finalists.
