Over the past month as the Covid-19 crisis has accelerated, I have been working with the Festival team to consider how we might present a Festival in 2020. It has now become clear that, given the current outlook, it is not going to be possible to do so. We have, therefore, along with our board of trustees, taken the hugely disappointing decision to cancel the 2020 Edinburgh International Festival.
“For the three weeks of the Festival, Edinburgh will be wholly given up to Festival affairs – she will surrender herself to the visitors, and hopes that they will find in all the performances a sense of peace and inspiration with which to refresh their souls and reaffirm their belief in things other than the material.”
Sir John Falconer, Lord Provost of Edinburgh, 1947
Edinburgh is known throughout the world as the Festival City.
There is much more than just one ‘Edinburgh Festival’ making up the Festival City. In August alone, there are six different festivals running at the same time, including the International Festival.
Visitors come to Edinburgh every year to experience the many different festivals which all present a diverse variety of artists and events throughout the year.
